The Automobile Club of Romania (ACR) joined the European Road Safety Charter at the recent FIA Cooperation Forum (COFO), held in Brussels in March. The National Representation Office of the Regions of Romania (UNCJR) and Mr Aurel Trandafir, EU Affairs Advisor, hosted a cocktail party for COFO and provided the venue. The document was signed by ACR President Constantin Niculescu, in the presence of the Commission. "By signing this European Road Safety Charter, it is also clear that Romania has finally joined the EU. We have set ourselves the target of reducing, by 2010, road deaths by 50%", said Niculescu. The ACR committed itself to organising road traffic educational "laboratories" for some 15,000 school pupils in 100 schools in Romania by the end of 2007. The ACR will also continue to organise a five-stage yearly road traffic education national contest involving some 30,000 pupils, and will launch a national campaign for child car safety. Lastly, the ACR will campaign for a better road traffic culture and improved communication between drivers for road safety purposes through 250,000 leaflets, 100,000 stickers, 10,000 posters and three short films.
